Instructions:

1. Preparing the Cabbage:

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  • Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and immerse the whole head in boiling water.
  • Allow the cabbage to soften for about 5-7 minutes or until the outer leaves are pliable.
  • Remove the cabbage from the water and gently peel off the leaves, setting them aside to cool.

2. Filling Mixture:

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it into small pieces.
  • Add chopped onions and garlic to the skillet, sautéing until softened.
  • Stir in cooked rice, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove the mixture from heat and set aside.

3. Rolling the Cabbage Rolls:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Take a cabbage leaf, place a spoonful of the filling mixture near the stem end, and roll it up, tucking in the sides as you go.
  • Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.

4. Assembling:

  • In a bowl, mix crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and chicken or vegetable broth.
  • Spread a thin layer of the tomato mixture on the bottom of a baking dish.
  • Arrange the cabbage rolls in the dish, seam side down.
  • Pour the remaining tomato mixture over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are well-covered.
  • If desired, sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.

5. Baking:

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through.

6. Serving:

  • Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
  • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
  • Serve the cabbage rolls warm, accompanied by additional tomato sauce if desired.

Enjoy these flavorful cabbage rolls as a comforting and hearty meal!
