Instructions:
1. Preparing the Cabbage:
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
- Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and immerse the whole head in boiling water.
- Allow the cabbage to soften for about 5-7 minutes or until the outer leaves are pliable.
- Remove the cabbage from the water and gently peel off the leaves, setting them aside to cool.
2. Filling Mixture:
- In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it into small pieces.
- Add chopped onions and garlic to the skillet, sautéing until softened.
- Stir in cooked rice, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the mixture from heat and set aside.
3. Rolling the Cabbage Rolls:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Take a cabbage leaf, place a spoonful of the filling mixture near the stem end, and roll it up, tucking in the sides as you go.
- Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
4. Assembling:
- In a bowl, mix crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and chicken or vegetable broth.
- Spread a thin layer of the tomato mixture on the bottom of a baking dish.
- Arrange the cabbage rolls in the dish, seam side down.
- Pour the remaining tomato mixture over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are well-covered.
- If desired, sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
5. Baking:
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through.
6. Serving:
- Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
- Serve the cabbage rolls warm, accompanied by additional tomato sauce if desired.
